Crucial to ORG’s Strategic Peacebuilding Programme is its long-standing Strategic Engagement model which addresses situations of intractability and radical disagreement where so far conflict resolution does not work. The model was pioneered and developed by ORG through more than a decade’s work hosting dialogues in Palestine and Israel.

Some of the greatest challenges to peacebuilding are in intense conflicts zones where the Strategic Engagement approach can offer critical purchase when other approaches do not yet gain traction. It engages conflicting parties where they are, not where third parties want them to be. Therefore it does not begin between the parties when this is not possible but instead starts within them, helping them engage with conflict differently by building their capacity for Collective Strategic Thinking.

In this paper, SPP Director Emily Richardson and ORG consultant Professor Oliver Ramsbotham outline ORG’s unique methodology for Collective Strategic Thinking which helps conflict parties assess where they are, where they want to be, and how to get there.

About the authors:

Emily Morgan is the director of ORG’s Strategic Peacebuilding Programme. Prior to joining ORG she worked for Quaker Peace and Social Witness as coordinator of a human rights programme focussed on Israel and Palestine. She also spent six years working for Control Risks, a corporate risk consultancy where she managed due diligence and business intelligence investigations across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Emily holds an MA in Peace Studies from Bradford University and a BA in Arabic from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). She has travelled extensively in the Middle East region, spending considerable time in Egypt, as part of her studies; Lebanon, coordinating an educational care centre for underprivileged children; and the West Bank, Palestine, as a human rights monitor. She is proficient in Arabic and is currently learning Hebrew.

Oliver Ramsbotham is a Consultant on ORG’s Strategic Peacebuilding Programme. He was Chair of the Board from April 2007 until July 2013. Oliver is a specialist on conflict resolution and designed an original approach to handling 'intractable' conflict, which he calls ‘radical disagreement’. This approach both informs - and is informed by - ORG's ongoing work with the Palestinian Strategic Group and the Israeli Strategic Forum. Oliver is Emeritus Professor of Conflict Resolution at the University of Bradford (UK) and President of the Conflict Research Society. He is series Co-Editor of Routledge Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution.
