Abigail Watson, Research Manager at the Oxford Research Group’s Remote Warfare Programme, spoke at the 20th Bruges Colloquium on the 17 and 18 October 2019. The event was jointly organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the College of Europe. She was on a panel with leading academics, practitioners and international experts examining the operational challenges of partnered operations. Her presentation examined the military, legal and political implications of remote warfare – reflecting on a three-part series she co-authored on this subject last year.

She also drew on some of the conclusions of the Remote Warfare programmes latest report, which will be launched on the 26th November. Following extensive interviews with military and government officials, academics and civil society groups, field research in Mali and Kenya, the presentation highlighted some of the shortcomings of Western responses to partner operations.
