Non-proliferation Treaty

Oxford Research Group and the British American Security Information Council (BASIC) worked together on a project designed to help ensure that the outcome of the 2005 Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference would strengthen both the NPT and the State Parties' commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.

ORG and BASIC aimed to:

  • Shape and refine a set of detailed recommendations during a series of consultations and discussions with UK and US government officials, and senior representatives from NPT delegations.
  • Build support for the recommendations among NPT delegates and national governments (especially, but not limited to, those in Europe, North America and the Non-Aligned Movement) and countries comprising the New Agenda Coalition (NAG).
  • Seek to develop policy positions that can overcome existing policy differences and unite national delegations to the NPT.
  • Raise the level of awareness among politicians, journalists and other opinion shapers in Europe and North America, of key issues concerning the NPT and its implementation.

In the build up to the Review Conference, ORG and BASIC produced a series of briefings for decision-makers and journalists exploring key issues surrounding the NPT.
