Asia-Pacific Security in the 21st Century

CDR 23, March 2000 Report Cover

This report arose out of the international consultation ORG organised in Malaysia in November 1999 to address the most pressing security challenges facing the South Asia and Asia-Pacific regions in the 21st century. The conference brought together some 26 senior government officials, diplomats and independent experts from 16 different countries in the region.

The papers published in this report are abstracts of those presented and discussed at the consultation, and cover both military and non-military threats to security in the region. The non-military threats include: the impact of instability experienced by national economies on the social fabric; religious and ethnic friction; the degradation of environmental systems; the increasingly unsustainable consumption of resources; and the growth of international crime. The working group reports and the recommendations to governments arising out of the discussions are also included in this CDR.
