The fourth in the Remote Control Project’s remote-control briefing series from Open Briefing, has been published today. The briefings cover developments in five key areas or remote warfare: special forces, private military and security companies, unmanned vehicles and autonomous weapon systems, cyber warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
This month’s stories include news that low-level cyber activities are increasing across Iraq, leading to speculation that state-sponsored actors are using cyber tools to disrupt IS communications. There is also news and analysis of the recent Stimson Center task force report on US drone policy, and, in the UK an ‘emergency’ data retention and surveillance legislation was passed in UK Parliament this month, further illustration of the UK Government’s increasing focus on ISR and cyber capabilities.

The Remote Control project is a project of the Network for Social Change hosted by Oxford Research Group. The project examines changes in military engagement, in particular the use of drones, special forces, private military companies and cyber warfare.
