Effective Safeguards?

Secure Energy Factsheet 2, Dr. Frank Barnaby, November 2005 Factsheet Cover

This factsheet explains why the safeguards that operate at nuclear power plants such as Sellafield cannot guarantee that all of the weapons-usable plutonium, for instance, is secure from theft or diversion.

Furthermore, a decision by the British government to build a new round of nuclear power plants would lead to the development of Generation III and IV reactors that use MOX fuel and plutonium respectively. In the current international security environment, it would be very unwise to increase the availability of these materials.

This is the 1st in a series of factsheets published as part of our Secure energy project.
