German edition of Beyond Terror published

ORG is pleased to announce that our popular book Beyond Terror has been published in German by Edition Nautilus as Jenseits des Terrors: Was unsere Welt wirklich bedroht. The book is already available in English, Portuguese and Dutch, and a Spanish edition will be published shortly. We are still actively seeking publishers in other countries who might be interested in translating the book.

ORG's work raised in House of Commons debate

ORG's work on sustainable security has recently made its way into the House of Commons after being mentioned twice during the debate on the EU Treaty. On 20 February, Joan Walley MP impressed upon Foreign Secretary David Miliband the importance of ORG's sustainable security approach and again on 27 February she urged the House to to look into ways of making foreign and global security policies more sustainable based on ORG's work.

ORG has published An Uncertain Future: Law Enforcement, National Security and Climate Change, a new report by Chris Abbott, which explores the environmental, socio-economic and security consequences of climate change and demonstrates that they will present new challenges to governments trying to maintain domestic stability.

ORG internships

The second is due to start at the beginning of April and will focus on assisting with our Moving towards sustainable security project. The Psychology of Anti-War Activism

How has the British peace movement developed and changed over the past decades, and what are the challenges facing it today? ORG's Executive Director, John Sloboda, has recently published two analytical articles on this with co-author Brian Doherty. These follow earlier ORG publications on the motivations of the anti-Iraq War demonstrators of 2003, and a report by the late Janet Bloomfield on making peace and security NGOs more effective. The current articles analyse the growth and transformation of the British peace movement (PDF) from the 1950s to the present day, and argue that contemporary conditions offer unique challenges for united and effective civil society activism (PDF).

Honorary Treasurer (Trustee)

ORG is looking to recruit an Honorary Treasurer to join the Board of Trustees and oversee our finances at a time of transition and growth. The appointment requires a commitment of approximately one day a month and is for a period of up to 3 years. The position is voluntary but expenses are paid.

25th Anniversary Celebration of ORG

On 5 December, ORG along with over 150 friends and supporters, celebrated it’s 25th anniversary at a special showing at the Royal Society in London of the BBC film of Michael Frayn’s play, Copenhagen. The film showing was then followed by a panel discussion with the playwright, ORG’s founder, Scilla Elworthy and four other eminent panellists. You can download the programme here (PDF). The event preceded an important high-level symposium which took place the following day at the Royal Society on "Nuclear Futures – Realities and Choices".

"Beyond Terror" published in Dutch

Our popular book Beyond Terror: The Truth About the Real Threats to Our World has now been published in Dutch by A.W. Bruna. A Portuguese edition was published earlier in the year, and German and Spanish editions will appear in early-2008.

Human security in Gaza

Much is known about the parameters of the political endgame of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but little is being done to examine and minimise the current unbearable human suffering in Gaza. ORG has published a new report, Conflict, Economic Closure and Human Security in Gaza, which seeks to redress this balance by offering a new insight and a detailed account of the day to day security breaches and the root causes of violence.

ORG offsets greenhouse gas emissions

To play our part in tackling climate change, ORG has teamed up with Climate Care to offset the greenhouse gas emissions from our organisation. Climate Care will fund projects in green energy, energy efficiency and forest restoration around the world to reduce emissions on our behalf. This is part of an ongoing process ORG started 3 years ago, by which we are successfully working to reduce our impact on the environment.
