From the Swamp to Terra Firma: The Regional Role for the Stabilisation of Iraq

This report provides a detailed synopsis of discussions that took place during an April 2008 meeting hosted by Oxford Research Group, the King Faisal Center and the Diplomatic Institute Riyaadh to examine the challenge of finding a regional consensus for stabilising Iraq. In particular it explores a number of important insights into the view from Saudi Arabia and highlights five different scenarios for the future of Iraq. It also examines competing images of Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United States and the issues of national identity, sectarianism and federalism. The report concludes by exploring a number of possible future paths and processes.
